1. Start a real estate business ($6M/year)

T. Cory Lewis from North Carolina, USA started T. C. Lewis & Co. Real Estate almost 16 years ago, a real estate business.

  • Revenue: $500,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 36
  • Location: North Carolina, USA

I’m from a very small town in the Appalachians called Sylva, North Carolina. If you’re not familiar with that region, it’s a very diverse area. Sylva is in the north end of Jackson County, and Cashiers (and neighboring Highlands) are in the south end. Sylva is blue-collar, and a factory-type (now tourist) town and Cashiers/Highlands is a spot where some of the wealthiest people in the world have vacation homes and are all members of one of the ultra-exclusive private clubs.

Growing up, I worked at my family’s convenience store. I saw a lot of the folks headed through to Cashiers and Highlands up from Atlanta for the weekend, and a big portion of them seemed to be making their money in real estate. Some were making money buying the mountain land around my town at a low price from local farmers who had no use for the steep mountains, developing a portion of the top, and then selling it off for astronomical amounts of money to other rich people. I was amazed by that. And I couldn’t understand why no one locally had tried this himself.

I come from a fairly long line of entrepreneurs on both sides of my parent’s families. My great-grandfather on my dad’s side quit school after the fifth grade, and then he went on and started a convenience store business that I still help operate 85 years later as it has passed down to my grandfather, my dad, and now myself and my brother. And my grandfather on my mom’s side owned a heavy civil construction company building large-scale projects like interstates throughout the mid-1900s. My uncles and cousins still operate a part of that business, too.

2. Start a food truck ($18M/year)

Jeffrey Mora from Los Angeles, California, USA started Food Fleet over 9 years ago, a food truck.

  • Revenue: $1,500,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 6
  • Location: Los Angeles, California, USA

We started the food truck business in 2012.

We kept finding it very difficult to find locations to operate. We had a booker that we used to find our locations but fell short and we let her go. I took over our booking and found that most people did not want to book just one truck, not only that they were upset that most of the time the trucks didn’t show up or were late.

We learned the real need was not only helping the trucks but providing a turnkey service for the corporations. This was a game-changer for us, we were really struggling financially.

3. ($120K/year)

Gia Paddock from Phoenix, Arizona, USA started Boutique Rye about 4 years ago, a business.

  • Revenue: $10,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Phoenix, Arizona, USA

My backstory has absolutely nothing to do with what I am doing now, but that is what makes us so unique. I went to college for education and became an elementary school teacher. I taught 4th grade for three years. However, I knew that was not meant to be my “forever” job.

Something I have always enjoyed was shopping. I mean what girl doesn’t have this as a hobby?! I had always thought it would be amazing to have my own boutique and get to wear new clothes almost every day.

I started thinking about this crazy idea when I got pregnant with my son, Riley. I knew I didn’t want to teach forever and this was my way out! During the summer I quit teaching, I got a job at a local boutique just working part-time, and it was here where the wheels starting turning for this idea. I saw how much I loved going into work every day and how much I enjoyed helping others pick out outfits for different occasions.

4. Start a clothing manufacturing business ($888K/year)

Donovan Mathews from Singapore, Singapore started Bryden Apparel over 7 years ago, a clothing manufacturing business.

  • Revenue: $74,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 6
  • Location: Singapore, Singapore

I started my own t-shirt brand called Ardentees back in 2009 when I was still in school as e-commerce was starting to get popular. I was intrigued by the whole idea of e-commerce as you could reach a worldwide audience easily. I especially loved the idea of waking up to see emails of orders from customers around the world.

I always had that inner voice urging me to start something on my own related to sourcing & manufacturing and I decided to register a business to reserve the name.

After getting 2 friends on board, we spent a year sourcing & testing different manufacturers with major hiccups along the way before finally able to settle for one and start selling.

5. Start a recruiting business ($180K/year)

Kingsong Chen from Toronto started Techintern.io 11 months ago, a recruiting business.

  • Revenue: $15,000/ month
  • Founders: 3
  • Employees: 3
  • Location: Toronto

I had done some tech consulting with my cofounders Qile Wang and Daniel Lee and noticed that a lot of startups were growing quickly, raising a lot of funding, and needed to hire tech talent quickly. Around the same time, many large tech companies had paused their internships programs during the pandemic and so a lot of very strong developers lost their internships. I realized that this was a perfect match and so my co-founders and I started to connect these companies with students individually. As we got more demand, we decided to scale the process and start building a web application.

Working on the right product or the right fast-growing industry will make every part of your job easier. An idea with a strong market demand will make it easier to get beta testers, receive feedback, do marketing, hire, and more.

I am a YC founder and have also worked previously with companies in the blockchain space. I validated the demand side by reaching out to different companies to see if they would consider hiring a technical intern. My co-founders are recent University of Waterloo graduates and we are very connected to different student groups and tech events.

6. Start a dog training business ($60K/year)

Donald Hutcherson from Manhattan Community Board 1, New York, USA started Fraternity K9 about 2 years ago, a dog training business.

  • Revenue: $5,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Manhattan Community Board 1, New York, USA

I started as a young kid who always loved dogs but never knew how to take care of them. I had several dogs in my life. A Lab/terrier mix, a pit bull, and several other mix breeds. I would always watch Cesar Milan and think “I could do that”. It wasn’t until I had a dog that would bite your hand when you took its food bowl that I realized it was a lot harder than I thought. I decided I was going to learn this dog training.

Everybody always says do what you love, but what if that thing you love makes no money?

I spent hours studying and then I got wrapped up in it. I would learn something new and become obsessed with dog training even more. I ended up learning from different teachers and knew I wanted to be the best.

7. Start a photography business ($1.32M/year)

Kyle Nelson from Chico, California, USA started Results Imagery over 4 years ago, a photography business.

  • Revenue: $110,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 8
  • Location: Chico, California, USA

We both had previous experience in another start-up called Soul id which was a social media platform for action sports. We ran the marketing and media at that company which was a blast. After we left that company, we split directions. Eli got involved in the eCommerce industry by starting a brand called Winterial which he grew to hundreds of SKUs. Kyle headed in the media direction and started a commercial photography company where he worked with Fortune 500 companies and small businesses.

At this time Kyle wanted to be able to get back in the start-up world, grow a large brand and a team of like-minded creatives and innovators. So like any entrepreneur, he jumped on Google and started to search for media companies that were also technology-based companies as well. That is where the inspiration of starting a digital agency that solely focused on the media portion for brands and product companies came to life.

Culture is the centerpiece of a successful company. Creating a place for employees to come to work and enjoy what they do, the environment and who they work with will pay long term dividends.

8. Start a knife sharpening service ($2.4M/year)

Marc Lickfett from Malibu, California, USA started Knife Aid about 2 years ago, a knife sharpening service.

  • Revenue: $200,000/ month
  • Founders: 5
  • Employees: 20
  • Location: Malibu, California, USA

I have a long and successful history in branding and starting businesses, one of them being my biggest success, Happy Socks, which I started 12 years ago. The biggest motivator for me to create my own companies is being free and in control of my own destiny and constantly living an adventure. It’s about the journey of creating something from the beginning that is built on the need or desire of people and then trying to put it in front of as many people as possible to be successful. Shortly after writing our business plan I found Magnus Petersson. With 30 years’ experience in knife sharpening, and having achieved celebrity status among chefs in the high-end restaurants in Los Angeles, and coincidentally originally from Sweden, Magnus was the perfect lead Knifesmith for the company.

Me and my family, moved to California to start this idea, and Knife Aid was established in Malibu with Mikael as CEO and Magnus as Master Knifesmith, training and overseeing a team of knife sharpeners.

9. Start a food delivery business ($300K/year)

Marcia Wiggins from South Portland, Maine, USA started Cape Whoopies over 8 years ago, a food delivery business.

  • Revenue: $25,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 4
  • Location: South Portland, Maine, USA

Before Cape Whoopies was conceived, I was enjoying being the mom of two kids in high school, the wife to an airline pilot, and an aerobics teacher at my local gym.

When my kids had gone off to college and my husband was in the air, I had much time on my hands. There was only so much time you could spend at the gym, so with the newfound extra time I splurged in one of the things I always loved doing: making delicious baked things for friends.

My husband and I spend time a local restaurant as a hangout when he was home, so we would go to DiMillos and take our server friends whoopie pies. Why whoopie pies? I had tasted the Maine creation and thought, "good idea, not great execution".

10. Start a barber shop ($1.5M/year)

Antonio Camilleri from Balzan started Antonio’s Barber Shop over 6 years ago, a barber shop.

  • Revenue: $125,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 25
  • Location: Balzan

My career has been a long road before I found success. Firstly I was a bar manager, then a soldier, then a bus driver, then a restaurant owner and chef. Finally, I decided to follow my grandfather's steps and become a barber. My grandfather was a barber on navy ships during WWI and WWII. I also worked in the UK for 5 years as a barber before opening in Malta.

The idea came about identifying a business opportunity and taking full advantage before the eventual competition, our success was the fact that we re-introduced old school barbering modernized and hip to cater for today’s gentlemen. In barbering, competition, when we started in Malta was non-existent. There were the typical hairdressers and 2 old school barbers which were unchanged since the ‘60s.

The idea was validated by my clients, one day a multi-millionaire came to get a haircut and I was discussing my concerns of growing and investing all my life savings into the business, his reply was “I just bought a company for 5 million euros over breakfast,” he just told me, “now is the time to invest and try creating something revolutionary.”

11. Start a health care training business ($180K/year)

Kyle Golding from Oklahoma, USA started Vorttx Training and Testing about 5 years ago, a health care training business.

  • Revenue: $15,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Oklahoma, USA

My co-founder Tadd Weese is an operations manager for a long-term medical facility. Part of his job is doing emergency response training for the entire staff of the facility and then proving this training had been done whenever the facility was inspected by state or federal regulators.

A huge part of our journey has been our decision to go slow with a technology product. We could have taken loans, shopped for VC money or even raised “friends and family” funding to go faster but we really didn’t want to be constrained in that way.

This is required by law, but there is no official tool, document, process etc. to execute the training and document. This would be like filing your taxes without the IRS forms.

12. Start a career coaching business ($1.68M/year)

Patrick Curtis from San Francisco, California, USA started Wall Street Oasis over 15 years ago, a career coaching business.

  • Revenue: $140,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 10
  • Location: San Francisco, California, USA

After working 90+ hour weeks in investment banking at Rothschild for a few years out of college and then transitioning to private equity two years after that, I thought I had it made. I landed my dream job in private equity in my dream city (Boston) and had a much more healthy work/life balance.

The dream, however, quickly turned into a nightmare. In my first review less than 4 months on the job I was fired on the spot and asked to sign a waiver and take $10,000 to go away. I was confused and my confidence was shattered.

Even worse, I was blackballed from private equity in Boston. Every time I had an offer in hand it would get rescinded because the employer that fired me would only say that I worked there and wouldn’t give me a reference -- probably out of fear because I wouldn’t take the $10,000 or sign the waiver.

13. Start a bridal accessories store ($600K/year)

Vivian Chan from San Francisco, California, USA started East Meets Dress about 3 years ago, a bridal accessories store.

  • Revenue: $50,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: San Francisco, California, USA

My co-founder, Jenn, and I met and became best friends during our freshman year at Yale. After graduation, Jenn had started her career at Google before working at several smaller startups and then joining a coding bootcamp. I started my career in education and nonprofits before joining an early stage startup that was later acquired by Facebook. Around this time, Jenn and I started working on the concept that would later become East Meets Dress.

When we first started, we had no experience in fashion, e-commerce, or entrepreneurship. We simply had our own experiences as consumers.

The idea for East Meets Dress (EMD) originated from Jenn’s personal struggles when she was looking for a modern version of the cheongsam, a traditional Chinese wedding dress. She wanted to wear a cheongsam for her wedding tea ceremony to honor her parents and heritage but finding a modern design that fit her aesthetics turned out to be near impossible. At the time, her options were limited to suspicious onlines sites or stores in Chinatown with poor service and a narrow selection. Ultimately, Jenn resorted to custom making her cheongsam at a local tailor. I was her Maid of Honor and we both felt that Asian-American brides shouldn’t have to be confined to low-quality options or scouring Yelp to find the one tailor who could make a quality cheongsam from scratch.

Jeff Olson from Denver, Colorado, USA started LEVDisplay about 4 years ago, a electronics store.

I moved to Denver in 2011 after graduating from college and started working in software sales.

My goal was to pay off my student loans as quickly as possible and then start my own business. Entrepreneurship was always the end game, but I wasn’t sure about what business I wanted to start yet.

By 2014 I had paid off my $30K student debt and was feeling pretty burned out. I quit my job (I was working for a company called Autodesk at the time) and got a part-time bartending gig. I had worked in restaurants through college and knew that bartending was the easiest way to earn cash while figuring out what kind of business I wanted to build.

Christmas of 2016 I was hit with a major life-altering realization. I did not know who I was anymore. I did not know who I was outside of being a “wife” or “mom”? After you have had 8 children and have been pregnant or nursing for 10+ years you tend to lose all sense of direction. I got stuck in a very hard, yet beautiful cycle of mothering. This realization began a long hard journey of finding my worth, calling, and ultimately finding joy in life again.

What I did not expect, was that while I was thriving and becoming more passionate and driven inside, my outside world was crumbling. Through these crazy ups and down years of motherhood, I found my grounding in creating. Specifically sewing and embroidery. I would try to sneak away as often as I could to do something creative. Unfortunately, most of the time it was between the hours of 9:00 pm and 4:00 am.

I did everything from making boutique children’s clothing, creating gifts for babies, making and selling tutus, beanbag tuffets, and more. At some point, I realized that I really did not have an extra 10+ hours a week to do the boutique clothing or sew the larger projects that take forever to make. I needed to find something that I could make start-to-finish during nap time. I began to value sleep more than success! I began being a bit choosier with my projects and tried my hand at embroidered key chains.

I graduated from Chico State University, studying Business Finance, and jumped around from job to job looking for my ideal career. I struggled to find something I was passionate about and found myself lacking drive and ambition.

Be patient and enjoy the process. NO company started perfectly and it does take trial and error to learn what works for your industry.

It was not until I got a kick in the butt by my now wife that I decided to take life into my own hands and start something for myself, for us. I had worked construction jobs and other trade work before I realized I did not like the way they ran their workers and their business.

Industries change. Times are constantly changing. Relationships, if built regularly, can last forever!

From that day forward, I created the perfect way to audit an operational system or create one, effectively and efficiently. My systems consultation service is still available to this day and I’ve helped business owners dial in theirs to allow them to grow and transform their teams.

I have 15 years of professional experience across Investment Banking, Tech Consulting, and Entrepreneurship and have studied in 3 continents in Asia, North America, and Europe from schools like the University of Michigan, Indian School of Business, and the London School of Economics.

I have been an entrepreneur 3 times now and founded my first company at the age of 19 to sell paint jobs to homeowners in Detroit while studying full-time at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. This was my first experience as an entrepreneur and got me hooked to the hustle required to get stuff done. I followed it up with a stint in Investment Banking, which taught me the meaning of perseverance and quality testing when I worked 100+ hours a week on multi-billion dollar Financing and M&A deals.

I came across the idea of starting SkillSoniq when I was working with outsourced talent on a tech project a few years ago, where I was sitting in the United States and working with contractors in the Philippines. That experience was extremely excruciating, as I worked at odd hours to keep up with the time zone differences, had difficulty communicating with the contractors and there was a lot of concern around IP security and trust. That experience put me in major depression and when I started looking for better alternatives to hire talent in the US quickly and at affordable rates, I found that the recruiting space in the US was broken.

If we rewind the clocks, you could say I started out in business when I was in my teens at college. I’ve always been quite entrepreneurial, trying everything from starting my own band, to spending hours at night learning everything I could about marketing, business, and personal development.

I reached a point in my early college days when I thought to myself, ‘I’m not really learning how to become an entrepreneur here. I’m basically learning how to become an employee.’

From there, I gave up the college dream and got a job where I was working for the Government as a data processor... which is literally THE most boring job on earth!

I did not scatter and try doing all the social media platforms. I made choices. This is really important. You can’t do everything well. And depending on your strategy, not all the options are pertinent.
