1. Start a franchise development business ($12M/year)

John David Busch from Austin started Busch Global over 26 years ago, a franchise development business.

  • Revenue: $1,000,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0

I’m guilty of being a serial entrepreneur. I love building businesses and really wanted to find a way to share that passion with others. I actually started a very successful kid’s gym when I was still in college. Back then, I was definitely working harder rather than smarter.

There are too many franchise concepts that sell too many locations without the ability to support those locations.

After college, I wanted to continue being an entrepreneur and that was the root of Busch Global. Busch Global started as a franchise and a regional developer. We found a couple of brands that worked well and were able to grow those brands. Our success over the last decade really showcased the potential in franchising done the right way.

In August 2016, I was on a steep downward trajectory in my job as a communications director at a nonprofit as a result of philosophical differences with the organization.

It was very uncomfortable, at best. The day before I was to part ways with the organization, I was having my pickup truck worked on at my mechanic shop and needed a ride to pick it up. Having applied the previous night to a communications job at a ride-sharing company, Lyft, I downloaded the app to my phone and hailed a ride.

The man who picked me up was clearly not from our hometown of Nashville, Tennessee. Although he had a strong indeterminable accent, he spoke fluent English and we had a great conversation on the way to the mechanic. Turns out the man was from Nepal. When I asked him if he knew anything about the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek — something my wife and I had placed on our Bucket List years ago — he smiled and said, “I am an Everest Region Sherpa. I’ve guided that trip dozens of times. I actually own a small trekking company in Nepal.” We exchanged numbers and quickly set up a meeting for that weekend so my wife could ask him about the trek.

Maanda Mulaudzi from Remote started Common Sense Holdings over 2 years ago, a IT company.

  • Revenue: $5,000/ month

I would have to say I have always wanted to start my own business even from high school. I started a business with a high school friend and we would sell custom basketball shoes. Then my second business was making school sports gear throughout the university. During this period from high school until now, I have been a professional skateboarder, which has helped me travel all over the world. This was also a way I made money through hosting and organizing events.

When you think you have all the answers that will lead you to make more mistakes if you don't know something just ask someone who has that knowledge. This will help you reduce mistakes, swallow your pride, this is business.

I graduated from university as an industrial engineer and also have a diploma in financial management and have worked in various industries such as automotive, media and broadcasting, education, and manufacturing. After five years in the corporate world, I decided to travel and explore more of the world.

4. Start an online food business ($360K/year)

Jen Hansard from Brooksville, Florida, USA started Simple Green Smoothies almost 9 years ago, a online food business.

  • Revenue: $30,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 1
  • Location: Brooksville, Florida, USA

In 2011, we moved here from California to Florida so my husband, Ryan, could help start a church with a friend. He was a brand new pastor and the job didn’t come with a salary. I was a stay-at-home mom doing any random design job I could to scrape together money to help pay for rent and groceries.

Being an entrepreneur was never my dream. I wanted to get married, raise a family, decorate a cute house, travel a lot as a family. I started my own business out of necessity— it was my way to help feed our family and pay our rent when things got real tough.

One day, I got the mail and opened a letter that said, “You no longer have health insurance.” We knew this was coming. But we couldn't avoid it and sorta lived in denial that it would happen to us. Well, it did and I felt like a safety net had been pulled out from under us. What if one of the kids gets sick? Or one of us gets sick? Our small savings would be wiped out and we'd go under.

5. Start a dog walking business ($648K/year)

  • Revenue: $54,000/ month

  • Location: Remote

I have always had a passion for animals. I was going to school full time at the University of Rhode Island as a Pre-Vet student while working full time at a local veterinary hospital AND picking up pet sitting and dog walking clients on the side.

Since my late teenage years, I have known that I wanted to work with animals. While working at the animal hospital, I saw a great need for this type of service, and soon after decided to start this business!

I would often come across clients who had not traveled in years because their pets required specialized care or medications or because they did not know who to ask or whom they could trust with their pets and their home.

6. Start an event planning business ($420K/year)

Akshay Patel from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA started Simply Decor and Events ago, a event planning business.

  • Revenue: $35,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 2
  • Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

I always had an eye for decor whether it was with my room, home, or anything. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM, and went to college at the University of New Mexico where I got my bachelor’s in Biology and a minor in Psychology. All along with my schooling, I was following the path to becoming a dentist which I thought was my passion and what I enjoyed. When I graduated high school I wanted to throw myself a big party. So my dad gave me a budget of $3,000 which had to include the venue, DJ, catering, bar, and decor.

I learned that when advertising you have to try different and unique ideas. From this you will learn what will work for your specific clientele, this process is a trial and error.

Of course, you know when you want a real fancy party the venue usually takes most of the budget, as it did. I was left with $200 for decor. I then began talking to decor companies and found that everything I wanted was not going to be possible with that amount. I thought out of the box and began making all my own decor.

7. Start a virtual assistant business ($12K/year)

  • Revenue: $1,000/ month
  • Founders: 2

  • Location: Davao City, Davao del Sur, Philippines

Ten years ago, my husband and I were working in an office set-up. Due to a mix of struggles experienced, my husband and I decided to quit our job and transition into freelancing. The transition phase was difficult since we didn't have the facilities needed like a computer and internet connection. We worked in an internet cafe for the first month of our freelancing career until we bought our personal computer and had our internet connection.

We had experience downtime in our new career at first, but we grow and learn from our mistakes as we go along. Freelancing changed the quality of our lives, our family, and so with our marriage. We embrace these benefits to realize that if mothers can work at home, they can earn while taking care of their family.

Another thing is the overseas workers. They have been working far from their family to make a living. Those who are exhausted and feel unproductive because of many circumstances like long hours of commute eat a lot of their time, endangering their work-life balance. These are a few of our realizations why we come up with putting Filipino Virtual Assistance. Because we know how difficult it is to work far from our family, we want to empower Filipino families, one freelancer at a time. We want to provide our graduates an avenue to earn dollars at their homes' comfort, without the hassle of traffic, toxicity of the environment, and an excellent opportunity for those who never got the chance to go to College.

8. Start a moving company ($720K/year)

Max Maher from Chandler, Arizona, USA started Skinny Wimp Moving almost 6 years ago, a moving company.

  • Revenue: $60,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 12
  • Location: Chandler, Arizona, USA

I didn’t exactly come up with the initial idea for this company because this is a franchise which means for me that I license out the name “Skinny Wimp Moving”. However, because it was the first franchise location I was able to be in a prime decision-making seat and guinea pig for all ideas enabling me to test out theories on marketing and customer service which have no become standard across the brand.

Put yourself out there and ask for their business. Sure be conscious that you may get rejected but don’t be afraid to ask more than once. It won’t work every time but it will work 100% more than not trying at all.

We realized people simply don’t want a moving company that sucks. So we asked ourselves what can we do to make the stressful experience of moving suck a little less and the answers we came up with and stuck to were very common sense:

9. Start a photography business ($1.32M/year)

Kyle Nelson from Chico, California, USA started Results Imagery over 4 years ago, a photography business.

  • Revenue: $110,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 8
  • Location: Chico, California, USA

We both had previous experience in another start-up called Soul id which was a social media platform for action sports. We ran the marketing and media at that company which was a blast. After we left that company, we split directions. Eli got involved in the eCommerce industry by starting a brand called Winterial which he grew to hundreds of SKUs. Kyle headed in the media direction and started a commercial photography company where he worked with Fortune 500 companies and small businesses.

At this time Kyle wanted to be able to get back in the start-up world, grow a large brand and a team of like-minded creatives and innovators. So like any entrepreneur, he jumped on Google and started to search for media companies that were also technology-based companies as well. That is where the inspiration of starting a digital agency that solely focused on the media portion for brands and product companies came to life.

Culture is the centerpiece of a successful company. Creating a place for employees to come to work and enjoy what they do, the environment and who they work with will pay long term dividends.

10. Start an app for music producers ($12K/year)

Ezra Sandzer-bell from Portland, OR, USA started AudioCipher Technologies over 1 year ago, a app for music producers.

  • Revenue: $1,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 1
  • Location: Portland, OR, USA

I grew up in a musical family, so I was writing music and playing in bands at an early age. My interests shifted from performance to music philosophy in my early twenties. In 2007 I discovered a technique used by classical composers to encode words into melodies. The idea of hiding secret messages or “easter eggs” in music appealed to me, plus the concept was underrepresented, so I decided to run with it.

Some of the people suggested we start with a free app to test the waters. But if someone is willing to pull out their credit card and pay for the thing, then you know you have a good idea.

In 2014 and 2015, I had two books published on the subject of musical cryptograms. It was around this time that I took my thoughts into public forums and started speaking at conferences. It became clear that the idea was interesting to people but too difficult for most people to put into practice. So I pivoted to a career in technology. My experience as a technical writer led me to publish a few articles for Google and I landed my first salaried position at a SaaS company in Spring 2018.

  • Revenue: $100,000/ month

  • Location: Los Angeles, CA, USA

I originally started MaidThis as a side hustle while I was working at a private equity investment firm. Like many people working the corporate grind, I was fascinated by becoming my own boss.

With any first product or service launch, you’re almost guaranteed to get some aspect of it wrong. You might be priced too low, not be addressing the right target market, or have the package all wrong.

I finally stumbled upon The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferris, which turns out is basically the Bible for the digital nomad community, and decided I wanted to experience “location freedom”.

12. Start a dog training business ($60K/year)

Donald Hutcherson from Manhattan Community Board 1, New York, USA started Fraternity K9 over 2 years ago, a dog training business.

  • Revenue: $5,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Manhattan Community Board 1, New York, USA

I started as a young kid who always loved dogs but never knew how to take care of them. I had several dogs in my life. A Lab/terrier mix, a pit bull, and several other mix breeds. I would always watch Cesar Milan and think “I could do that”. It wasn’t until I had a dog that would bite your hand when you took its food bowl that I realized it was a lot harder than I thought. I decided I was going to learn this dog training.

Everybody always says do what you love, but what if that thing you love makes no money?

I spent hours studying and then I got wrapped up in it. I would learn something new and become obsessed with dog training even more. I ended up learning from different teachers and knew I wanted to be the best.

13. Start a bridal accessories store ($600K/year)

Vivian Chan from San Francisco, California, USA started East Meets Dress over 3 years ago, a bridal accessories store.

  • Revenue: $50,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: San Francisco, California, USA

My co-founder, Jenn, and I met and became best friends during our freshman year at Yale. After graduation, Jenn had started her career at Google before working at several smaller startups and then joining a coding bootcamp. I started my career in education and nonprofits before joining an early stage startup that was later acquired by Facebook. Around this time, Jenn and I started working on the concept that would later become East Meets Dress.

When we first started, we had no experience in fashion, e-commerce, or entrepreneurship. We simply had our own experiences as consumers.

The idea for East Meets Dress (EMD) originated from Jenn’s personal struggles when she was looking for a modern version of the cheongsam, a traditional Chinese wedding dress. She wanted to wear a cheongsam for her wedding tea ceremony to honor her parents and heritage but finding a modern design that fit her aesthetics turned out to be near impossible. At the time, her options were limited to suspicious onlines sites or stores in Chinatown with poor service and a narrow selection. Ultimately, Jenn resorted to custom making her cheongsam at a local tailor. I was her Maid of Honor and we both felt that Asian-American brides shouldn’t have to be confined to low-quality options or scouring Yelp to find the one tailor who could make a quality cheongsam from scratch.

14. Start an online advertising agency ($300K/year)

  • Revenue: $25,000/ month
  • Founders: 1

When I tell my story I like to get into the details of how I landed where I currently am and where I am going. I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico. I ended up in the United States after my father got a job offer for a marketing position at a semiconductor company, this was when I was only 10 years old. To be honest, the move definitely had an effect on me. When I lived in Mexico I was a fairly outgoing kid and (I believe) the move caused a shift that made me more of an introvert so you could say that was a bit against me, since I didn’t necessarily enjoy being the center of attention or being “noticed” too much for much of my upbringing. I finished high school and went to Arizona State University where I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Marketing alongside a certificate in entrepreneurship.

Right around the time of graduation from high school and the start of college I started a clothing line. I believe I was only 19 at the time and I didn’t have a budget to promote the new clothing line, so I turned to social media as my route to promote and sell the new products. I had to learn everything from Photoshop to constructing a website, content, photography, content distribution, supplier relationships, and many other skills. After seeing success marketing on social media, I quickly found that I was passionate about digital marketing. I then realized that there was a place where I could polish up my digital marketing skills, an agency, which to my surprise were not as concerned with academics as they were with real-world experience.

I went on to work for a marketing agency, after finally finding one was willing to overlook my lack of agency experience and realized that my entrepreneurial spirit and persistence would outweigh the need for the experience all the agencies were looking for. I was hungry. At this agency, I got hired on as a content writer (which I didn’t necessarily enjoy the most, but I knew I had to do it if I wanted to eventually lead the paid advertising department which was my goal). I was able to do just that within a year. I studied the ins and outs of the agency, how it operated, how it dealt with clients, how it made mistakes, and most importantly what helped it scale.

  • Revenue: $1,661/ month

When I was 14, I was looking for ways to earn money. One day when visiting my uncle, he explained eBay to me and how he found his niche of selling various antiques. I was fascinated, and eager to start. He supplied me with vintage postcards to sell. It took me a while to research and learn about the postcards and how to productively sell them, but I learned the process and started making some initial sales. However, I quickly recognized postcards weren't my passion, but I knew LEGO was. I picked out some LEGO Minifigures from my own collection to list and sell and in two months, I made $200. As a 14-year-old, this was more money than I’ve ever had!

My model although profitable, was not sustainable, I only had so many Minifigures I was willing to part with. Frustrated, I sat down with my dad, shouting “I wish I could find more LEGO to sell”.

Hello everybody! My name is Holger and I’m a designer-turned-developer from Denmark. In the last couple of years, I’ve been working on a solitaire gaming website called Online Solitaire, which features the most popular solitaire games such as Klondike, Spider, and Freecell.

The game itself has actually been somewhat of a side-hustle of mine for a while now. It initially started years back as a Mac app that was sold through the Mac App Store, where it earned around $800 a month.

After having made the app, I ended up going to New York to start a startup called Slang which was a marketplace for sneakers and streetwear, with a friend of mine. That venture effectively led me to have my solitaire app on a perpetual backburner. And after a few years of no maintenance, the app got so buggy it was eventually thrown off the app store.

Hello, my name is Mahsun Avci! I'm the founder of Avci ApS. At a fairly young age (15) I decided to start my own business. An online marketing agency, where we help businesses grow their bottom line through paid traffic and sales funnels. By taking a holistic approach to business, we make comprehensive online strategies that take our clients from their current situation to their desired situation.

Our vision is to become Denmark’s best boutique marketing agency, where entrepreneurs and ambitious businesses can come to us and grow their businesses to unimaginable heights.

At the time of writing this, I’m making around $10.000 pm and the goal for 2021 is to hit $175.000 in profit with my marketing agency.

My marketing agency changed my life because of the low cost of starting and the huge income potential. Client retainers range from $1,000 to $10,000 a month and there are many instances where I take a percentage of the added profits from my clients. Since the costs of a completely digital SMMA are incredibly low, most of that is profit. Also, unlike other agencies, I online focus on the core things that will move the boat forward and can help our clients get to their desired situation.

During 2015, we, the two co-founders Henrik and Hansol acknowledged that forming a small biotech company would be a great solution for their many crazy ideas. Based on research performed first at University of Copenhagen and later at the Technical University of Denmark, we established Mosspiration Biotech, IVS in January 2016.

The Fragrant Moss was made as part of a research project between 2011 and 2014. It led a happy life in the petri-dishes until 2016, when the idea of the "Natural Air Freshener" was launched. We collaborated with creative people in San Francisco throughout 2017 to get this right. After several attempts, we now have more fragrant versions and with even stronger fragrances within several types of glass jars.

And for some real world inspiration, give Misty Dupree's story on creating Medical Bag Tags, LLC a read:

My name is Misty Dupree and I own Medical Bag Tags, LLC. I create customizable medical and allergy awareness bag tags for your purses, backpacks, lunch boxes, and more! I desire to help bridge the gap between the medical community and everyday folks by raising awareness of medical and allergy conditions. My Bag Tags can help in emergencies where someone may not be able to speak for themselves.

I started Medical Bag Tags, LLC in October 2018. Shortly after I started my business I was hit with the loss of a child, and within 3 years I managed to also go through the loss of a marriage, endured a year of covid, became a single mom to my 8 beautiful children, and moved cross-country back home where I would have the support I needed to get back on my feet.

During the darkest of dark days, I managed to keep my business afloat, getting small orders here and there. I did manage to pull myself out of the muck and get my LLC and Registered Trademark too. I am now on the other side of the years of pain and am looking forward to putting more time into my business and seeing it grow.

And for some real world inspiration, give Debendra Prasad's story on creating Assure Shift a read:

Hello! My name is Debendra Prasad. I'm the founder of Creatisoul a web development and digital marketing company, and AssureShift, an online moving companies directory for finding nearby professional packers and movers in Delhi and other metro cities.

We have a strong network of more than 700-800 packers and movers under our wing, and they are spread across various cities in India. We have extended our reach to moving companies as well as customers from major metro cities like Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Gurgaon, and others to tier-2 cities like Thane, Noida, Navi Mumbai, Patna, Nagpur, and so on.

We have successfully served more than 50,000 customers across approximately 23 cities in the country to date. We plan on expanding our reach to smaller cities where relocation services are currently absent. On average, we earn a yearly revenue of approximately 1 Cr ($250K).
