My co-founder, Jenn, and I met and became best friends during our freshman year at Yale. After graduation, Jenn had started her career at Google before working at several smaller startups and then joining a coding bootcamp. I started my career in education and nonprofits before joining an early stage startup that was later acquired by Facebook. Around this time, Jenn and I started working on the concept that would later become East Meets Dress.

When we first started, we had no experience in fashion, e-commerce, or entrepreneurship. We simply had our own experiences as consumers.

The idea for East Meets Dress (EMD) originated from Jenn’s personal struggles when she was looking for a modern version of the cheongsam, a traditional Chinese wedding dress. She wanted to wear a cheongsam for her wedding tea ceremony to honor her parents and heritage but finding a modern design that fit her aesthetics turned out to be near impossible. At the time, her options were limited to suspicious onlines sites or stores in Chinatown with poor service and a narrow selection. Ultimately, Jenn resorted to custom making her cheongsam at a local tailor. I was her Maid of Honor and we both felt that Asian-American brides shouldn’t have to be confined to low-quality options or scouring Yelp to find the one tailor who could make a quality cheongsam from scratch.

We’ve been friends for awhile - we met right out of college in New York and stayed close even though we took fairly different professional paths.

Saara worked in the corporate world for a number of years before moving to Mexico where she launched a jewelry business aimed at rehabilitating sex trafficking survivors. Stephanie was a business consultant before going to law school and becoming a corporate lawyer; along the way, she launched an argan oil company that empowers women in Morocco.

I’ve been an entrepreneur for almost 10 years now - I started my first business in college - a meal plan service for college students. I worked on it on nights and weekends while I had a full-time job at a startup, eventually grew it to a 7-figure business, and was able to become a full-time entrepreneur.

I’m always looking for different tools and opportunities, and have been using many no-code tools including Zapier, Typeform and Squarespace before “no-code” was a trend.

About a year ago I came across Glide, a no-code tool to build apps using a google sheet as the backend. At the time, I was looking for a new side-project to start and decided to create a conference app business using Glide called ConferenceTap

The concept for ProMD Health was initially created by my partner Dr. George Gavrila. Believe it or not, he began by treating toenail fungus using a single laser in a 1 room medical office. He was our first receptionist, medical assistant, and physician. He saved every penny he could from that to get trained in Botox and thus ProMD Health was born. We are now one of if not the largest purchasers of Botox and Dermal fillers in the Mid-Atlantic and one of the top practice groups in the country.

From day one he had the dream of building a company that brought the flourishing industry of Aesthetic Dermatology to more than just the elite while also finding a way to bring the power back to the physician so that they could own their own practice and share in his dream in light of heavy pressure to join ever growing HMOs or multi-physician owned large practice groups.

But he couldn’t do it alone, he recognized the need for a partner.

Waxing Kara grew organically from my work as an artist. I paint with encaustic, a paint made with beeswax, and in 2010, I started beekeeping on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to harvest wax for my encaustic paintings.

I became captivated by honey production and the plight of honey bees in this country. I learned about the importance of bees to the sustainability of our food supply, and the preciousness of honey, especially its nurturing and healing properties. Before launching Waxing Kara, I became a honey bee advocate and began raising bees on a small scale and have increased each year until 2020 when I will manage 18 hives on our 102-acre farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. For the bees, I began planting food sources such as sunflower, bergamot, and lavender. The goal was to cultivate a complex, organic environment that provides bees essential nutrients through nature. We have planted at least 40 acres of wildflowers, fruit trees, and berry bushes, an incredible habitat all for bees (and other winged creatures) with consistent blooms from May through October.

There isn’t one single life experience or educational achievement that has put me where I am today. Instead, it’s been a series of inspirations along the way. There was no master plan. In hindsight, everything that happened has flowed like honey to lead me down this path.

I graduated from Pratt Institute in 2012 with a degree in fashion design, focusing on costume design.

At the time, I just wanted a job that could support my life in New York City - stability, a salary, healthcare, that whole thing. While I’d have loved to get a job in costume design, that’s tougher to get into without connections.

Being able to change is, in and of itself, a trust in your innate abilities to grow in ANY field, rather than shackling yourself to one particular look.

My interest in herbalism started when I was teaching health in 1998 and an herbalist guest speaker came into my classroom. Isabelle Hadley showed my high school students beautiful jars of dried herbs and passed around small vials of plant-based essential oils. She talked about using these beneficial plants for health and beauty, as healthier alternatives to products many of us were using in our daily lives. Everything smelled so good and I was captivated. I followed Isabelle out of the classroom and took her 6 Saturday long course at her cozy log cabin in the woods. We learned about plants and made herbal products. I had found my passion.

Supporting pollinators is a big part of what we do here at Everlasting Herb Farm. We give back to help the plants that help support us.

Five years later in 2003, with the help of my friend, Mary Ellen Reis, Everlasting Herb Farm was born. We met while volunteering for our local school’s parent/teacher group when our children were little. We went to Pickety Place in New Hampshire one day, which is where you can enjoy a fabulous 5-course herbal lunch, walk through greenhouses, and wander gift shops designed around herbal themes. On the long, three hour drive home, we chatted about starting our own herbal business.

The story is actually pretty interesting, I had just finished my studies and was on my way to go to Japan with NO plans, money, or job/school. I had literally nothing going on in my life aside from music, which I was working on as a hobby.

In marketing the human element is really what makes it all work. I used to do giveaways monthly, sharing all the UGC on social media.

I had been playing with the idea of launching my own brand in the past, because I’ve always been drawn to fashion and anything creative, but didn't really know how to go on about doing so.

The inflection point for me had its origins in both professional and personal life.

Most of my time at Unilever was spent with categories such as Haircare and Skincare. Customers buy brands in these categories for benefits like anti-dandruff. Surprisingly, the same customer ends up making purchases in foods due to taste & refreshment alone. Shouldn’t we be carrying more about the benefits of products that go in our bodies as compared to what goes over our bodies?

The second insight came from my personal life. A backbone fracture led me to three years of Physiotherapy which did not help. I turned towards Yoga and five years later, I came out not only a fitter person but also a changed being. That’s when I started learning and practicing Ayurveda.

At 10-years-old I saw a bicycle in a neighbor’s trash can and asked if I could have it. I ended up with two broken bikes and combined them to make one, which I rode and eventually sold.

In junior high school, I took woodshop and fell in love with woodworking. Evenings, my father, the school superintendent who had started out as a shop teacher, would take me to the school’s woodshop and we’d build furniture and Christmas presents and fix things.

Today, my career is based around restoring old bicycles, pedal cars, Coke machines as well as other items. I previously worked at Beech Grove schools doing education technology, but began to get burned out and wanted to do something that I really enjoyed. Around that same time a TV show called “American Restoration” was on the History Channel, and it inspired me. I thought, ‘Wow, that guy [on TV] is making a living at restorations, maybe I can do the same”. So I just kind of blindly cashed in my 401k and jumped into it not knowing what to do or how to run a business or anything like that. I started in my mom’s garage, and I put up a website right away.

30 years ago, my mum was “Patches The Clown” catering for kids parties. Her passion for parties led her to open a small party store with my grandfather. From the age of 4, I was put to work filling small bags with sand for 5 cents each which would be used to weigh down helium balloons on tables.

We love change. Every time something changes, there is an opportunity for us to be early and capitalize while everyone else drags their feet.

My family moved to Canada in May 2007 which makes me a first generation immigrant. I was 21 around the time, and I came from Mumbai, India where I already had a job in advertising.

I continued to experiment with drop shipping and other small ecommerce niches, till it hit me - I needed to build a brand, which was focused on longevity, I wanted to start a purpose-driven brand, not just any watch store.

In those days, Vancouver was still a small market and the opportunities in advertising and other related industry were very limited, so I got a job selling Indian (Punjabi) radio and for my first year in Vancouver, Canada. I took public transit to do sales at mom and pop Indian stores door to door to sell radio advertising.

So I got placed in a medium-sized private company in 2016 after my graduation and I served for about 4.5 years there. With the pandemic rising, I had to look for another job because things got messy there. So, I switched my job as I wasn’t still convinced to take the risk of doing my business full time. I switched and joined somewhere else as their Social Media Manager.

Being in a creative industry, and handling the digital marketing activities of the organizations gave me a great insight into how business is done. I started believing in the power of digitalization and how I was so good at it. This was the major reason why I even thought of setting up something like Shaadivaale in the first place.

I gained a lot of experience by working at my two employers and it took me 3 years to take my venture to a place where I started seeing results. It did not come easy but what surprised me most is that I wasn’t even willing to give up. Several other ideas were popping up in my mind but I never thought of the need to drop it and move onto the next one. I had my soul into it. It was clear.

It all started many years ago in South Africa where I grew up, originally born in Bulgaria though. At the age of 17, I got a job as a sales representative in a diamond store tailored for Chinese customers. That was the first time when I developed an interest for diamonds. After finishing high school, I headed to the U.K. to study digital marketing.

During this period, me and my high school friend David Sutton decided to start several websites and e-commerce businesses while studying at the University of Manchester​. Some teenage experiments and years later I reunited with David and we decided to start a real venture this time. That’s how the brand Rare Pink ( the first name of Taylor & Hart) was born in 2013.

This is the first time we've tried anything completely different from our previous careers. We came to D.C at virtually the same time (Louise in August 2018 and Jane in September 2018) and literally bumped into each other at an Estate Sale in Chevy Chase! Two Brits queuing for furniture for their new rentals in D.C. We hit it off instantly and formed a lasting friendship that has now blossomed into a small business. A win, win.

The idea first struck us while looking for ideas for birthday parties. We both have sons the same age and they were just old enough for sleepovers so we started searching. We came across the teepee parties through a friend of a friend who had set up a company in Northern Ireland offering Teepee Sleepovers there and discovered that there was nobody in D.C offering this service, so we decided to create our own. This was back in 2019 so we set to work coming up with party themes, creating a website (which neither of us had done before), and sourcing teepees and accessories. This took about 3 months and so by September 2019 we launched The Little Teepee Company.

I always had an eye for decor whether it was with my room, home, or anything. I was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM, and went to college at the University of New Mexico where I got my bachelor’s in Biology and a minor in Psychology. All along with my schooling, I was following the path to becoming a dentist which I thought was my passion and what I enjoyed. When I graduated high school I wanted to throw myself a big party. So my dad gave me a budget of $3,000 which had to include the venue, DJ, catering, bar, and decor.
