1. Start a freelance writing business ($90.4K/year)

Eva Gutierrez from Los Angeles, CA, USA started Eva Gutierrez ago, a freelance writing business.

  • Revenue: $7,532/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Los Angeles, CA, USA

Five years ago I was really lost and confused about what career path to pursue. I had graduated from college with a degree in Biology in hopes of becoming a doctor. I quickly found out that I didn’t want to spend my life working in an office or having to see as many patients as I could fit into my schedule to make back my medical school expenses. At the end of my senior year, I started to watch blogging really start to take off and was immediately interested—this was an entirely new career path we hadn’t see before and something about it made me want to learn more. I figured out how to use WordPress and made a free account to start something like a food blog. I published a few articles and just wrote about what I was eating and why I was so focused on eating nutritious foods over others.

After stumbling upon a writer’s Instagram profile with the bio, “Contributing Writer at EliteDaily”—I Googled, “How to be a contributing writer at EliteDaily” and sent in my application. They accepted me (to be fair, I think they were accepting everyone at this time) and I wrote a few articles for them. That was my first taste of the writing life, unpaid work that could get views if it struck the right chord with their audience. Those articles are still online today haha. But, because this was so new into the blogging world and I had absolutely no idea how to monetize or figure any of this out on my own, I didn’t take the opportunity too seriously. I assumed I’d need a “regular” job and soon stopped writing for EliteDaily.

After I graduated, I decided that I would take a break from applying to jobs I didn’t want and instead obligated myself to do something I loved every day with the hope of stumbling upon my passion and purpose. While it seems obvious now that I wanted to be a writer, at the time I was still pretty lost and confused. I didn’t know any successful internet writers and I wasn’t confident enough to ask people for help, guidance, or advice. But, a few weeks into obligating myself to do something that I loved every day, I started writing again.

2. Start a social media marketing business ($96K/year)

Mahsun Avci from Taastrup started Avci Media over 1 year ago, a social media marketing business.

  • Revenue: $8,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Taastrup

Growing up, I went to private school and was very blessed that my parents cared about my education. Somewhere around 9th grade, my perspective on the education system changed. I realized through books and YouTube videos that the life trajectory of a lot of the people I looked up to, was not aligned with what I wanted in life.

I was never a fan of what was taught in schools. Instead of religiously following what was being taught in high school, I self-educated in business, personal development, and leadership. When I was fifteen, I tried out various online businesses. I failed miserably at first. At this time I was very much into Fitness and I tried to sell training and diet plans. I managed to sell a few plans to my classmates for like $50, but it never really amounted to anything and most importantly it wasn't scalable.

After that, I tried stock trading and the likes. That too didn’t really work for me. One day I stumbled across SMMA. I was so intrigued by the concept, so I went ALL IN. I didn’t care what people thought. I was going to make it big here. I needed some proof of concept, so I convinced my dad to make me run his restaurant's Facebook Ads. I watched 100’s of videos and read tons of blogs, to know how to run successful ads and we were both pretty stoked about the results.

I knew it was the right business for me, but it was not all gold and green forests. In fact, at the start of my “agency journey,” it was so hard getting my feet on the ground and getting my first few clients after my dad.

3. Start a seo business ($72K/year)

Md. Yousuf Ali from Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh started Rank Trends ago, a SEO business.

  • Revenue: $6,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 2
  • Location: Mirpur, Dhaka, Bangladesh

About 10 years ago, I just finished my education life and joined a private company as a fresher. At that time, I heard that we can earn money by working online. I didn't believe it at first, but I had a bit of curiosity in my mind, and since then I've been researching how to make money working online.

I discovered oDesk (present name Upwork). I had been searching for a unique idea and got it from oDesk about digital marketing. Then, I have been studying digital marketing and researching this subject for about 4-5 years. In 2017 I started my new digital marketing agency called Rank Trends but it went live online in 2018 and got a very good response.

I was at a good place with my digital marketing businesses. Moreover, it permitted us to work from anyplace — one that allowed us to venture to the far corners of the planet and invest more energy with our families. Also, I wrote lots of articles about digital marketing including SEO, Social Media Marketing, Video Marketing, Domain Hosting, Backlinks, etc. We just try to share our knowledge with our website readers to make a bridge with them. I think this idea of digital marketing is a really helpful creation for people and me.

4. Start a logistics business ($1.2M/year)

Ben Elizer from Nashville, TN, USA started Velocity International Group over 5 years ago, a logistics business.

  • Revenue: $100,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 16
  • Location: Nashville, TN, USA

Velocity was born back in 2015 after months and months of research. I have a degree in logistics from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville, and a Masters’s degree in Business Management from Tennessee Tech University. I worked at a logistics company as a Manager in Training in Nashville, directly after college. After almost 5 years at the business and earning my MBA while working, I wanted more responsibility, but they didn’t want to expand the business or take on those new jobs to help me grow as an individual personally or professionally.

If you want to attract customers, show them how you can save them money, save them time, reduce a level of stress, and overall make their lives easier.

After interviewing for a few jobs, and applying for many more without much success, I decided to take the knowledge I had acquired over the past 4 to 5 years and put it to work. I left my previous employer, with a colleague, and started Velocity International Group. Validation of the company came from my previous experience in business and building trust in our customers by going above and beyond with great service.

5. Start a digital marketing business ($1.2M/year)

Rahul Alim from Los Angeles, California, USA started Custom Creatives over 16 years ago, a digital marketing business.

  • Revenue: $100,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 10
  • Location: Los Angeles, California, USA

My intention during and after high school was to move to Europe and play soccer (football) as my career. However, I was persuaded to try my hand at college which eventually took me down the path where I am today.

I grew up in a family full of entrepreneurs, thinkers…people smarter than me so I was definitely lucky to be in the right room.

My first job was selling credit card machines and processing. I was raw in business but determined (or stubborn) to make it alone with the help of no one (NOTE, this was a dumb idea and everyone should get help at every stage of life). When I started, I thought I was in a finance position. It turned out I was in a sales position, responsible for calling businesses to sell them on our services. It was the best thing to ever happen to me at this stage in my young career.

I was forced to talk to people, negotiate, persuade, help strangers over the phone - I learned one of the greatest skills of all time, how to sell over the phone. I had never sold anything, I learned sales in 3 days, then practiced every single day. This position lasted 30 days, but the grass only got greener. I was somehow recruited to a company called Homestore, which owned Realtor.com where I eventually became a top sales account executive managing the East Coast as my territory.

I went from the worst at sales in the company to the top 10 in the company. I took my sales learnings from my first job selling credit card processing to selling to internet advertising to Real Estate Agents, Brokers, Lenders and those involved in the real estate transaction.

After just a few years, I left Realtor.com (for no reason whatsoever, I loved working there) to start my own company. Young, dumb, no plan, no office, no product, no smart idea, but I had one thing to offer… I decided to help realtors manage and promote their listings on the internet.

6. Start an it company ($60K/year)

Maanda Mulaudzi from Remote started Common Sense Holdings about 2 years ago, a IT company.

  • Revenue: $5,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 2
  • Location: Remote

I would have to say I have always wanted to start my own business even from high school. I started a business with a high school friend and we would sell custom basketball shoes. Then my second business was making school sports gear throughout the university. During this period from high school until now, I have been a professional skateboarder, which has helped me travel all over the world. This was also a way I made money through hosting and organizing events.

When you think you have all the answers that will lead you to make more mistakes if you don't know something just ask someone who has that knowledge. This will help you reduce mistakes, swallow your pride, this is business.

I graduated from university as an industrial engineer and also have a diploma in financial management and have worked in various industries such as automotive, media and broadcasting, education, and manufacturing. After five years in the corporate world, I decided to travel and explore more of the world.

7. Start a recruiting agency ($3.48M/year)

Sharon Koifman from Montreal, Quebec, Canada started DistantJob about 13 years ago, a recruiting agency.

  • Revenue: $290,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 26
  • Location: Montreal, Quebec, Canada

I started off by running and owning a hosting company called Empire Host. We had about 3K clients at the time support was run from two offices in India with nearly 30 employees.

We were also providing an outsourcing package. Our business solutions were really cheap and to be frank, our results were mediocre at best. Although the service was fine for any mom and pop shop or even an “any results will do” kind of company, we noticed that too often, people who run tech companies actually outsourced to companies such as ourselves even work that went into their core offering - because it was cheap.

At the time, what outsourcing really was, was an arbitrage business. But the concept that people would outsource big chunks of their business to a company that does not provide the same level of communication, process, quality control, and culture just because they’ll save a lot of money, that idea really stuck with me.

8. Start a food delivery business ($300K/year)

Marcia Wiggins from South Portland, Maine, USA started Cape Whoopies over 8 years ago, a food delivery business.

  • Revenue: $25,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 4
  • Location: South Portland, Maine, USA

Before Cape Whoopies was conceived, I was enjoying being the mom of two kids in high school, the wife to an airline pilot, and an aerobics teacher at my local gym.

When my kids had gone off to college and my husband was in the air, I had much time on my hands. There was only so much time you could spend at the gym, so with the newfound extra time I splurged in one of the things I always loved doing: making delicious baked things for friends.

My husband and I spend time a local restaurant as a hangout when he was home, so we would go to DiMillos and take our server friends whoopie pies. Why whoopie pies? I had tasted the Maine creation and thought, "good idea, not great execution".

9. Start a tax service business ($0/year)

Yvette Sadovoy from New York, New York, USA started Savvy and Suite Ltd over 3 years ago, a tax service business.

  • Revenue: $/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 4
  • Location: New York, New York, USA

Unknowingly, Savvy and Suite has been brewing for the last 15 years. I began working in my father’s accounting firm when I was 12 doing basic data entry of the tax forms. Every year I learned more and more until 18 when I was able to complete a full tax return on my own. Since then I have dedicated myself to developing my skills and really crafted my own approach to tax preparation.

Stay true to yourself and committed even during the low times, your success will come.

Over the years I have worked with companies from so many different industries and I learned that every company, even in the same industry, operates differently. Every entrepreneur has their own method of growing their business and respectively, spend their money that way. By getting to know each and every one of my clients to the smallest detail of their habits, I am able to create a tax return that reflects their true expenses. In this way, I am ensuring that no deduction is overlooked and the tax savings are optimized. The cookie-cutter approach just doesn’t cut it for anyone. No pun intended!

10. Start a real estate business ($6M/year)

T. Cory Lewis from North Carolina, USA started T. C. Lewis & Co. Real Estate over 15 years ago, a real estate business.

  • Revenue: $500,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 36
  • Location: North Carolina, USA

I’m from a very small town in the Appalachians called Sylva, North Carolina. If you’re not familiar with that region, it’s a very diverse area. Sylva is in the north end of Jackson County, and Cashiers (and neighboring Highlands) are in the south end. Sylva is blue-collar, and a factory-type (now tourist) town and Cashiers/Highlands is a spot where some of the wealthiest people in the world have vacation homes and are all members of one of the ultra-exclusive private clubs.

Growing up, I worked at my family’s convenience store. I saw a lot of the folks headed through to Cashiers and Highlands up from Atlanta for the weekend, and a big portion of them seemed to be making their money in real estate. Some were making money buying the mountain land around my town at a low price from local farmers who had no use for the steep mountains, developing a portion of the top, and then selling it off for astronomical amounts of money to other rich people. I was amazed by that. And I couldn’t understand why no one locally had tried this himself.

I come from a fairly long line of entrepreneurs on both sides of my parent’s families. My great-grandfather on my dad’s side quit school after the fifth grade, and then he went on and started a convenience store business that I still help operate 85 years later as it has passed down to my grandfather, my dad, and now myself and my brother. And my grandfather on my mom’s side owned a heavy civil construction company building large-scale projects like interstates throughout the mid-1900s. My uncles and cousins still operate a part of that business, too.

11. Start an ecommerce retailing business ($300K/year)

Tom White from Sydney started Breeze Mobility over 3 years ago, a ecommerce retailing business.

  • Revenue: $25,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 1
  • Location: Sydney

I have a background in digital marketing and running online businesses. I’ve been buying and renovating online businesses for over 12 years, starting with a $50 website about natural toothache relief which I sold for a whopping $200! But whilst this didn’t make me rich it showed me what was possible and I went on to build a small portfolio of online businesses and buy, renovate and sell others.

Treating your existing customers as VIPs will encourage repeat business, reviews, and referrals and it's much easier than finding a new customer!

Before BreezeMobility.com.au I was looking for an opportunity where I could make a bigger impact and build a ‘real’ business I could be proud of. I’m excited about the next few years as I see where I can take the revenue, and the impact Breeze Mobility can make.

12. Start a franchise development business ($12M/year)

John David Busch from Austin started Busch Global about 26 years ago, a franchise development business.

  • Revenue: $1,000,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Austin

I’m guilty of being a serial entrepreneur. I love building businesses and really wanted to find a way to share that passion with others. I actually started a very successful kid’s gym when I was still in college. Back then, I was definitely working harder rather than smarter.

There are too many franchise concepts that sell too many locations without the ability to support those locations.

After college, I wanted to continue being an entrepreneur and that was the root of Busch Global. Busch Global started as a franchise and a regional developer. We found a couple of brands that worked well and were able to grow those brands. Our success over the last decade really showcased the potential in franchising done the right way.
