1. Start a home decor business ($102K/year)

James Wolfer from Portland, Oregon, USA started Valhalla Wood Forge over 4 years ago, a home decor business.

  • Revenue: $8,500/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 3
  • Location: Portland, Oregon, USA

I started Valhalla Wood Forge in 2017 while working full-time as a police officer. Our department was smaller, only seven of us total, we didn’t have full-time detectives so we had to fulfill dual roles as patrol and doing detective level investigations. I was working long hours, investigating a lot of sex crimes, which were taking a huge emotional and mental toll. Additionally, I was (and still am) a Coast Guard reservist, doing law enforcement and search and rescue, so my stress level was very high.

One day, the Police Chief ordered a big wooden flag for like, $500. I remember looking at it and thinking, “I could make that, but better.” So I got some wood, borrowed a circular saw from my parents, and made a flag to donate to my department. The department put a picture of me with the handmade flag on Facebook, and pretty soon, I was getting requests from cops and military buddies for their own flags. For the rest of 2017 and really, the first half of 2018, I didn’t charge much as I was only making 1-2 flags a month. I was having fun and had found a way to unwind and work through a lot of stress, and have my tools get paid for. Score, right?

Do your homework if you’re going to use outside marketing agencies, and don’t take shortcuts.

2. Start a jewelry wholesale business ($1.2M/year)

Victor Long from Shenzhen started Shenzhen Shibao Jewelry Co., Ltd almost 4 years ago, a jewelry wholesale business.

  • Revenue: $100,000/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 10
  • Location: Shenzhen

I used to be responsible for the process of the company at IBM from 2007 to 2013. I then came to know the silver jewelry industry by chance in 2015. I found that the silver jewelry factories of China have leading advantages in craftsmanship and price even worldwide, thanks to the low human resource cost and huge scale of the market.

Surprisingly, the production of common silver jewelry factories is much un-efficient than I thought. The biggest problem that leads to low efficiency is they didn’t form a set of standardized processes. For this reason, the worker may mistake the direction of the chain, and their QC might not identify customer requirements whether the surface should be glossy or shiny. The products fail to meet the requirements and the high rate of defective products leads to high costs.

After realizing that, I began to think about whether it is possible to use information technology to enhance the process of the factory by standardizing the entire manufacturing process iteratively. So everyone in charge of the production process could be fully aware of the right target.

3. Start a fashion accessories store ($72K/year)

Jen Fox from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA started Foxly Handmade about 5 years ago, a fashion accessories store.

  • Revenue: $6,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA

I have been sewing and creating as a hobby and as a business since 2009, but my line of handmade bags under the name FOXLY Handmade began in earnest in 2016.

At the time, I worked full time as an interior designer at a commercial architecture firm, but I had an itch to have full creative control over a project from start to finish. I began making leather and canvas totes, block printed pouches, and all styles of bags. I developed the patterns myself, sourced materials, cut, stitched, marketed, and I developed a loyal following by carting those bags all over town to local shows (sometimes on a bike with a trailer attached to the back!).

Until I burned out. I was exhausted by the range of inventory that I was trying to keep up and weighed down financially by all of the supplies and materials I had to keep on hand to produce it. It was a pace I wasn't able to sustain, and all of my time was spent creating, and I had no brain power left to actually SELL. So I had to make a change.

4. Start a children's clothing business ($0/year)

Cameron Olthuis from Park City, Utah, USA started Sawyer about 4 years ago, a children's clothing business.

  • Revenue: $0/ month
  • Founders: 2
  • Employees: 3
  • Location: Park City, Utah, USA

My online entrepreneurial journey started when I was 21 and my then girlfriend was pregnant with our first child. That was almost 17 years ago. I was working a minimum wage customer service job, had no post high school education, and knew that I needed to make big changes in order to provide a better life for my family. It’s been a long journey that’s seen its share of ups & downs, with times where I literally wasn’t sure how I would be able to feed my family the next day. Somehow, it worked out, and I always knew the sacrifices would pay off if I stuck with it.

Most recently, my role was VP, Audience Development at CBS Interactive. During my 6 1/2 years at CBS, we grew from the #13 Comscore property to #6. That’s an elite group: Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Amazon, Microsoft and then CBSi. Prior to my role at CBSi, I ran audience growth at a startup called Clicker, which was acquired by CBS for a nine-figure sum. That was quite a learning experience.

The entrepreneurial spirit in me was calling the entire time I was at CBS Interactive. I never expected to be there for as long as I was, but incentives in the form of stock options that hadn’t vested and a big paycheck helped keep me around. That and I also enjoyed the learning experience, challenges of working on the biggest internet properties, and working for the CEO, who’s been a great mentor to me. But, my time had come. CBSi was running like a well-oiled machine and the excitement was no longer there for me. I needed to work on something that was meaningful to me again. I was also a partner in a content arbitrage business at that time with yearly revenues of around $7.5 million at its peak. That helped make the decision to leave easier. This was, of course, non-conflicting to my work at CBS.

5. Start a maternity clothing business ($36K/year)

Natalie Pitts from Auckland, New Zealand started Go Mama 8 months ago, a maternity clothing business.

  • Revenue: $3,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 1
  • Location: Auckland, New Zealand

I have had a full career in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, so sport and exercise have always been a big part of my life. During my maternity journey, I was constantly looking for budget-friendly clothing that was comfortable and flattering on a pregnant body and functional for breastfeeding too. I found a few things on the internet, but they were all expensive or didn’t ship to New Zealand (where I live).

After having my first child, I unexpectedly suffered postpartum depression and found physical activity was the most effective tool in managing my mental health. Once again I found there was a lack of suitable activewear that was also affordable to enable me to conduct physical activity when I was pregnant or wanting to breastfeed on the go.

With my print marketing, I always try to include a discount code to track which audience I am reaching. For example, if I advertised in a magazine, I would use the magazine name as a discount code for readers to receive 10% off their next order.

6. Start an electronics store ($48K/year)

Jeff Olson from Denver, Colorado, USA started LEVDisplay about 4 years ago, a electronics store.

  • Revenue: $4,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 0
  • Location: Denver, Colorado, USA

I moved to Denver in 2011 after graduating from college and started working in software sales.

My goal was to pay off my student loans as quickly as possible and then start my own business. Entrepreneurship was always the end game, but I wasn’t sure about what business I wanted to start yet.

By 2014 I had paid off my $30K student debt and was feeling pretty burned out. I quit my job (I was working for a company called Autodesk at the time) and got a part-time bartending gig. I had worked in restaurants through college and knew that bartending was the easiest way to earn cash while figuring out what kind of business I wanted to build.

7. Start an antique business ($180K/year)

Tim Showalter from Indianapolis, Indiana, USA started Hoosierboy Restorations LLC over 8 years ago, a antique business.

  • Revenue: $15,000/ month
  • Founders: 1
  • Employees: 4
  • Location: Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

At 10-years-old I saw a bicycle in a neighbor’s trash can and asked if I could have it. I ended up with two broken bikes and combined them to make one, which I rode and eventually sold.

In junior high school, I took woodshop and fell in love with woodworking. Evenings, my father, the school superintendent who had started out as a shop teacher, would take me to the school’s woodshop and we’d build furniture and Christmas presents and fix things.

Today, my career is based around restoring old bicycles, pedal cars, Coke machines as well as other items. I previously worked at Beech Grove schools doing education technology, but began to get burned out and wanted to do something that I really enjoyed. Around that same time a TV show called “American Restoration” was on the History Channel, and it inspired me. I thought, ‘Wow, that guy [on TV] is making a living at restorations, maybe I can do the same”. So I just kind of blindly cashed in my 401k and jumped into it not knowing what to do or how to run a business or anything like that. I started in my mom’s garage, and I put up a website right away.

8. Start an athletic footwear business ($150K/year)

Olguy Songolo from Leominster, MA, USA started the DIFFERENCE over 5 years ago, a athletic footwear business.

  • Revenue: $12,500/ month

  • Employees: 6
  • Location: Leominster, MA, USA

When I was a young boy, my father was in the throes of his research at Boston University. One day, to test out a concept he was developing, he cut off the heels of my school shoes, and sent me to class in heelless shoes! Despite looking a bit silly, I was amazed to find that I was comfortable throughout the day, and had no problem running, walking, or standing in this strange prototype. My dad had discovered something amazing.

His research had been focused on the functional anatomy of the foot, and in particular how different kinds of landings (front foot, flat foot, and heel landing) affected the body. How did foot and leg muscles compensate for these different impacts? In the end, the research was clear: heel landings were by far the most damaging to the joints. Simply put, this is because the heel has no shock-absorbing mechanism.

When you land flat or on the balls of your feet, the transverse arches of the feet and the associated muscles easily handle the impact, just as they would if you were running barefoot, in which case you always naturally choose a forefoot landing. However with a heel strike in running shoes, the force of 3-5 times the runner’s body weight is distributed into areas of the legs, knees, and back which are not designed to take these shocks, and over time all kinds of injuries can occur. Such damage includes back pain, plantar fasciitis, knee damage, flat feet, and more.
