When we ventured out to build a startup, we had a different idea in mind. We saw an opportunity to create a blockchain-based startup and we started looking for developers to build it for us. This was back in 2018. We wanted to hire top-quality developers and designers. We soon realized that the experts in the field are hard to come by. For those of us who are uber focused on quality over quantity, finding the right kind of people for the job was essential.

We strongly felt that we needed senior developers and designers who were highly skilled professionals that can assure the quality of service they provide. Unfortunately, most of these guys were already working for some of the largest corporations globally, and we did not have the budget to hire them as full-timers. We wanted to hire freelance developers to build it because for one, hiring permanent staff was not within our budget, and second, we didn’t see the point of hiring permanent employees to develop an MVP. The main options we had for looking for the talent were Toptal and Upwork as there aren’t very many recognized platforms out there for hiring tech talent even to date.

We tried out Upwork first. They appeared to be the cheapest. We assumed it’d be easy to get a good dev there that fits into our budget, so we set up a project. It was a pretty straightforward process at the onset. We had to enter the project details with the dates, description, deliverables, and budget. Then we gave it a day or two. Soon enough, our job posting was flooded with freelancers and agencies applying for the post. We narrowed down a few options and scheduled a few calls. Since Upwork doesn’t vet their talent, we just wanted to make sure we made the right hire.

I’ve been an entrepreneur since I was 14. I was kind of forced into it as both my parents died when I was young. I started my first business because my friend wanted to get an Xbox but his parents grounded him so we worked together to get the money. Our first business was a web hosting company, but our partnership split up after only a week. For the first time, I found a passion, an interest, a calling. What I discovered through that process is the creativity involved in building a business appealed to me. Since I lived difficult life, it was something I naturally fell into. I created several more businesses over the years. In one of them, I was screwed over by a business partner. All of this is mentioned in my book From Foster care to Millionaire.

What led me to start SN was my feeling of imposter syndrome and in confidence. In the last hosting company I had (sold for just south of a million) I realized I had to put in the support hours and deal with the customers’ gripes for many years. This is a skill I did not initially see within myself. I always wanted to work for startups but didn’t necessarily want to be one, so I found a niche within an existing proven market in the industry which ended up being outsourcing.

A lot of startups need outsourcing but most of the outsourcing companies that exist today weren’t necessarily founded for startups. I saw that I could appeal to startups and I had a natural interest in technology and using all the latest and greatest apps and seeing this inherent divergence of my interest within the tech community and the interest in building several businesses online, even including the company I built in India for the agents who were initially providing support for my customers.

Before all the glorious stats and achievements I just shared with you, we had to start somewhere and this is how it all began. Growing up I developed this undeniable passion and love for computer applications, hardware, and software at a very young age. I started off by running and owning a hosting company called Empire Host. We had about 3K clients at the time support was run from two offices in India with nearly 30 employees.

We were also providing an outsourcing package. Our business solutions were really cheap and to be frank, our results were mediocre at best. Although the service was fine for any mom and pop shop or even an “any results will do” kind of company, we noticed that too often, people who run tech companies actually outsourced to companies such as ourselves even work that went into their core offering - because it was cheap.

At the time, what outsourcing really was, was an arbitrage business. But the concept that people would outsource big chunks of their business to a company that does not provide the same level of communication, process, quality control, and culture just because they’ll save a lot of money, that idea really stuck with me.
