Hello again! Remind us who you are and what business you started.

My name is Dustin Maze. My family and I own and operate a local residential waste removal business in Colorado Springs, Colorado called SOCO Waste. The main service we provide is roll-off dumpster rentals for residential or commercial properties.

Since our last article, we have grown quite a bit not only in the number of dumpsters we rent yearly but we have also added weekly residential curbside waste pick up and our customer base has grown into the thousands! Previously we had revenues of over 40k a month and we are well above that now pulling in an estimated 140k per month!

Tell us about what you’ve been up to! Has the business been growing?

Previously we had two roll-off trucks on the road and delivered approx. 2500 roll-offs dumpsters a year. We have now added one more roll off truck and we are delivering approx. 3000 dumpsters a year. During this time two big companies in town with thousands of customers decided to sell to a few big corporations. We saw the demand for a local company that could provide great customer service and decided it was time to make the leap.

Be honest with your customers and let them know what your goals are and how you’re going to make their lives easier.

In September of 2020, we started offering residential weekly curbside trash removal in 65 gallons or 95-gallon cans along with weekly recycling pick up!

What have been your biggest lessons learned in the last year?

In the last year while joining the residential curbside part of things we have learned quite a bit.

One thing we knew from the beginning and part of the reason the roll-off business has thrived is that people want to be heard and clear communication is the key to a successful business relationship.

The second thing we learned was that in order to provide this service it takes an army of amazing people from the phone lines, logistics, and even down to the warriors on the streets.

What’s in the plans for the upcoming year, and the next 5 years?

At this point, we know people are busy and sometimes we cannot accomplish everything during normal work hours so we have implemented a full online ordering system that can let customers know if they are in our service area and set up service 24 hours a day! Check it out.

In the future, we also plan to work on our online ordering system to make it easier for our customers to order extra services like bulk item pick-ups extra bags, couches, mattresses, dressers, or almost anything else you can think of!

Have you read any good books in the last year?

I wish I had the time to sit down and read a good book but we have been overwhelmed with all of the new additions to the business.

Advice for other entrepreneurs who might be struggling to grow their business?

In our experience and what has helped us the most with our business was Honesty. Be honest with your customers and let them know what your goals are and how you’re going to make their lives easier. Oh, yea! Let's not forget that customers love it when they actually receive the service they paid for!
