Who are you and what business did you start?

Hi, I'm Hareesh Vemasani, and together with my friend Rohith, I co-founded ResumeUp.AI. After spending a decade building scalable software applications, we decided it was time to create something of our own, and that's how ResumeUp.AI was born.

ResumeUp.AI is all about making the job hunt easier: started as one of the initial players in the resume space with an AI-first approach. You get AI powered resumes, content suggestions, a powerful resume editor, an ATS compatibility checker, LinkedIn optimisation, and even a job application tracker — all in one place.

Today, ResumeUp.AI brings in around $4,000 MRR, and we're proud to be helping job seekers worldwide land more interviews.

How do you come up with the idea for ResumeUp.AI?

The inspiration for ResumeUp.AI struck when I realized how many great candidates were losing out on opportunities due to subpar resumes. I also saw firsthand as a hiring manager how many resumes got tossed by ATS software.

The "aha" moment came when an extremely talented friend of mine kept getting his resume rejected by big companies' ATS filters – he wasn’t even getting a chance to interview, and was unaware of ATS software and optimization.

Seeing that frustration made me think, there has to be a better way. The spark for this business idea came when I was playing around with the latest AI tech and GPT and realized, what if we could use AI to instantly fix and enhance resumes?

How did you build the initial version of ResumeUp.AI?

Hareesh Vemasani built ResumeUp.AI by focusing on creating an AI-first approach to resume-building. He spent 3-4 months building the MVP and testing it with a small circle before launching on Product Hunt, where it became the #1 Product of the Day. The first sale came within 3 days of the launch. Hareesh then focused on SEO-driven content and leveraged platforms like AppSumo for initial traction, gaining hundreds of new customers and valuable feedback. Through this process, he learned that the hardest part wasn't building the product, but getting it in front of people, realizing the importance of marketing and sales in scaling the business.

How did you launch ResumeUp.AI and get initial traction?

I didn’t rush into launching ResumeUp.AI. I spent 3–4 months building the MVP and started testing with a small internal circle of friends and colleagues.

Once I was confident on the product, we decided to launch on Product Hunt. I spent a month preparing for this - polishing the product, creating demo videos, and rallying a few friends for support on launch day. Finally, the day arrived, and we ended up at the #1 Product of the Day. This gave us an initial set of users and momentum to the product.

The first sale came within a few days of that public launch. I vividly remember that sale because I was refreshing our LemonSqueezy dashboard constantly. When it finally showed a payment, I felt a mix of relief and excitement. I think it took about 3 days to get that first dollar in the door.

What was the growth strategy for ResumeUp.AI and how did you scale?

After the initial launch buzz, our focus shifted to sustainable growth, and two strategies we are focused on: SEO-driven content and leveraging platforms like AppSumo as a initial investment.

Given my background in SEO and Tech, I hired a couple of freelance content writers and started creating blog posts and landing pages. These pages slowly started ranking on Google and got us organic traffic.

On the other side, we tapped into existing communities and marketplaces. A few months in, I decided to launch a lifetime deal on AppSumo (a popular marketplace for SaaS deals).

This was a strategic move to gain users and reviews quickly. We gained hundreds of new customers in a short span and collected a ton of feedback (plus a 4.6/5 average rating from around 65 reviews on AppSumo)

What were the biggest lessons learned from building ResumeUp.AI?

When I reflect on the journey of building this business, a few major lessons stick out in my mind. First, I learned that the hardest part isn’t building the product – it’s getting it in front of people.

Initially, I naively thought that a great product would automatically attract users. I spent months perfecting features, but only a little of that time promoting it.

Big mistake.

Eventually, I realized I had to step out of my comfort zone and learn marketing and sales. It was uncomfortable at first (as an engineer, I was more at home in front of a screen than on social media), but it made all the difference.
