The website focus on digital cameras and photography makes it surprisingly volatile in the present economy. We continue to see a downturn in the production of digital cameras, so these is much less content to write compared to a few years ago. This was expected to cause revenue to tank but instead it increased because manufacturers raised their selling prices to stay afloat.

This complex dynamics shifted how websites monetize. For Neocamera, lower traffic reduced ad revenues which incidentally isolates the website from the increased popularity of ad blockers.

Previously the spit of revenue averaged 50-50% between ads and affiliate programs. Now, it is closer to 25-75%. Affiliate programs are usually commission-based, so selling higher-price items results in increased revenue from the same number of visitors.

To improve affiliate revenue, Cybernium Inc implemented Product API based widgets that can show affiliate links with extra up-to-date information, such as selling price, availability, promotional pricing, shipping offers, etc. One thing that is crucial when adding more processing in anything user-facing is to limit its impact on speed.

Through some hard work, Neocamera remains one of the fastest digital camera website around, achieving a Google Pagespeed score of 97. We took advantage of the work to optimize other aspects and PageSpeed now reports that Neocamera implements 100% of best-practices and is 100% SEO compliant.

As Google updates its algorithms, these are always moving targets, so a 100% does not mean we can stop improvements, just that we're in a great place right now!
