Nissar started CareerMetis.com in 2015. They detail the beginnings of their company in their Starter Story interview:
Q: How did you get started on CareerMetis.com?
I started my 20s like most new graduates — unemployed and eager to start earning a living. I had just moved to Toronto, Canada, and I wanted to get a decent start to my carer.
But, as you can imagine, I went through all the challenges of the job search. I sent numerous applications and got only a handful of interviews and then struggled to convert those interviews into a successful job offer.
After a year of struggle and odd jobs, I did manage to break through and land a successful corporate job at age 22 in the electronic payments industry. It was my first breakthrough and laid the foundation for a successful Corporate Sales Career.
Since then, I have had to do most things that all young professionals had to do — negotiate a higher salary, get promoted, or get a new job.
I did all of them successfully. I also went through challenges such as lay-offs. All of this happened in my early to mid-20s.
Each step of the way, I had to learn via books, videos, and career coaches to maximize my success. I remember that once I paid a career coach $2000 to help me negotiate a higher salary. That investment paid off, and I got a sizable pay increase of 15% when the rest of my team struggled to get a 3-4% raise.
> Consistency has been my best friend. For more than 4 years, I have worked on this side-hustle. It has taken a lot of time and effort to learn blogging, SEO, link building, email marketing, content marketing, etc. The more time & energy I have put in, the more I reap the benefits.
Later, I also hired a career coach to create a compelling resume when I decided to leave that job, and that also paid off.
I was able to successfully navigate a sales career in many companies and industries. I reached a point where I was no longer afraid of losing a job or getting downsized because I knew that I could get a new position in a few weeks (45 days to be precise).
Job search and job change became both an art and science, and I had cracked it.
I then started sharing these ideas freely with my friends and family. Anyone who was going through an application or interview stage, I would share my ideas/strategies with them openly, not expecting anything in return. I just wanted to help.
At that point, a couple of my friends suggested that I start a blog and share all these ideas. They suggested that these ideas are evergreen, and many others would benefit from my ideas.
I brushed it off initially. I thought to myself, who would want to read my advice.
It took me 18 months of hesitation, self-doubt, self-persuasion, and the entrepreneurial bug for me to take action.
I finally registered the domain “CareerMetis.com.
I was looking for a word that meant “knowledge or skills,” and the best I found was “ Metis,” a Greek goddess who embodied wisdom.
So I registered the domain in Oct 2013. However, it wasn’t until June 2015 that I started blogging.
From June 2015 to Feb 2016, I wrote the first 100 articles and have not looked back since.
